Anger mounts at town hall
Anger mounts at town hall

There was a lot of anger in Wollongong Town Hall last night.
About 150 people braved cold and rainy weather to voice not only their frustration at being denied democracy but also fury after claiming to being ignored by councillors over many years.
Among the frustration however there was a sense of hope as many pleaded with the new administrators, two of whom - Robert McGregor and Gabrielle Kibble - were seated in the audience, to address issues they felt had long been abandoned by former elected representatives.
Speakers touched on many issues: Belmore Basin, Crown St Mall, public transport, Sandon Point, Wollongong Town Hall. It was a lot to take in for the audience which also included general manager David Farmer and Greens member Sylvia Hale.
"What we are facing is a question of legitimacy. Who legitimately speaks for the people of the city," said South Coast Labour Council secretary Arthur Rorris in an opening address.
He later warned that the only way the "reclaim our city" campaign would succeed would be with people power.
"We are not going to win it with 200 people here, we are going to win it with 200,000 people... The hard work isn't here, this is the easy part, it is at the subsequent meetings in the committee."
The audience resolved to fight for a return to elected local government representation, the reinstatement of the neighbourhood committees and a return to appropriate development.
After the meeting, the two administrators refused to comment on any aspect of the meeting.
Ms Hale also urged the crowd to support Greens Party election reform which, if enacted, would allow Wollongong City Council to hold local government elections by the end of the year.
