Wollongong will be showcased to an international audience of about 100 million people thanks to a visit yesterday by celebrity adventurer Charley Boorman.

Boorman was joined by 400 motorcycle enthusiasts from around the state after choosing Grand Pacific Drive and Sea Cliff Bridge for the final leg of an epic journey from Ireland to Sydney.

Of all the places he had visited in 28 countries, he said Wollongong stood out.

"I think it is beautiful," he said.

"I had heard of Wollongong. Sea Cliff Bridge sounds fantastic. This is the very last leg and it just seemed like the right thing to do is have bit of a ride into town."

Most of Boorman's riding companions had travelled to Wollongong especially for the experience.

The star of the Long Way Round television series with Ewan McGregor was joined by his family in Shellharbour on Monday.

Yesterday, he headed to Flagstaff Hill for the final leg of his three and a half month journey.

Tourism Wollongong general manager Greg Binskin described the opportunity to display Wollongong to tens of millions of television viewers around the world as "absolutely fantastic for the region".

"Having these people experience such a beautiful coastal drive on such a gorgeous day is just fantastic. It is a good day for Wollongong," Mr Binskin said.

Boorman was interviewed live by the Today Show while another film crew, commissioned by Tourism NSW, flew overhead in a helicopter, following the convoy along the Wollongong coastline to Sydney.

Boorman's latest documentary is called By Any Means and will be shown to more than 60 million viewers around the world on BBC Television. It will also be broadcast to 166 countries on the National Geographic Channel.

His journey has featured many modes of transport including trucks, donkeys, boats, trains and even elephants.

After more than three months on the road, Boorman admitted to feeling tired before being rejuvenated by the Wollongong leg, which took him along Grand Pacific Drive over Sea Cliff Bridge.

The journey then took the riders through the second oldest national park in the world, across Sydney Harbour Bridge and back before Boorman transferred to a camel to cross the finish line at Mrs Macquarie's Chair.

NSW Tourism Minister Matt Brown said the image of 400 motorcycles joining Boorman on the last stage of his journey would leave a lasting impression of the South Coast on television viewers.

Boorman started his last day signing autographs on helmets and jackets and posing for photographs with fans.

Nancy Riley, of Sydney, said she was so excited about his visit, she did something she had not done in more than two decades.

"I haven't been on the back of a bike for 25 years," she said.
