Fanning adds weight to Longbottom fundraiser

Australia's reigning world surfing champion Mick Fanning added his celebrity weight to a Darren Longbottom fundraiser last night.

Fanning was a surprise guest at the sell-out event that included a crowd of almost 800 people at Shellharbour Workers' Club.

Mr Longbottom broke his neck while on a surfing holiday in Indonesia on May 20 and is now in the spinal unit of Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital, awaiting transfer to Moorong Spinal Unit at Ryde.

Event organiser Steve Conti said it was hoped $100,000 would be raised to support the 36-year-old Kiama surf shop owner, his wife Aimee and daughter Bowie through the long haul of his rehabilitation and recovery.

Fanning, who donated a signed world championship surfboard for auction, said the fundraiser was a typical demonstration of the tight bond between surfers around the world.

"The Longbottoms are part of the surfing community and when something happens to that community, surfers put their best foot forward," the 27-year-old said.

"I've met Darren a couple of times, he's just typical of the community down here; the people are really cool and down-to-earth.

"The Longbottoms are great people, that's why they've got so much support.

"I'm just hoping everyone can support the family as much as possible because it's difficult times for them."

While Mr and Mrs Longbottom were unable to attend the event due to Darren's ongoing treatment, their families, friends and representatives from the region's business community were present.

Mr Longbottom's brother, champion big wave rider Dylan Longbottom, donated a signed tow board from his win in the Billabong XXL event.

In an emotional speech, Dylan paid tribute to his brother and the strength he had shown.

"He has handled this like a true champion and we are so proud of him.

"He would have been blown away by all the people here tonight, people we have known our whole lives.

"... I just want my brother to walk again."

A slide show of Darren's life was shown, followed by a surprise videotaped speech from Darren and Aimee.

The couple thanked everyone for their support.

"The support has been absolutely amazing, everyone is keeping us strong and keeping us going," Mrs Longbottom said.

She also paid tribute to the couple's daughter Bowie.

"She keeps us happy.

"She brings a whole other element to this."

The courage that the entire Longbottom family has shown, is true testament to a great family. Its easy to understand the tremendous support that Darren has received, due to his stature in the Kiama community. I can only wish Darren, Aimee, Bowie, Ross, Pam, Dylan and Kellie all the very best in aiding Darren to recover. Our family's thoughts are with you.

Update: over $160,000 was raised for the Longbottoms. Thank you to everyone who came to the night, entered raffles, bought auction items and helped in any other way. Daz, Aims and Bowie are blown away by the support!
