Illawarra's natural charm promotes Good Moods

The City of Innovation could soon become the wellness capital of Australia.

Lifeline's Grahame Gould will soon launch the Good Mood Safari, which will combine positive psychology training with activities capitalising on the natural beauty of the Illawarra.

Mr Gould came up with the idea after his wife Jane Cipants participated in a gourmet safari in Sydney.

"I thought about the idea of psychological tourism and taking people to sites that can really enhance the psychological concept that you are trying to impress at the time," he said.

University of Wollongong's Professor Frank Deane and Dr Lindsay Oades supported Mr Gould's concept.

The Good Mood Safari will take people away from their daily routine so they have enough time, energy and mental capacity to think about other things.

"The idea is to ... look at a smorgasbord of things that would be useful for you in a great learning environment and follow you for 12 months after that with periodic emails to see how you are going in terms of the goals you have set," Mr Gould said.

Highlights of the three days will include a sunrise walk on North Beach, and visits to Flagstaff Hill lighthouse, the Nan Tien Temple, The Abbey at Jamberoo, the Illawarra Fly and the top of Mt Keira.

Two highly qualified guides will help each group through the process.

A trial group of 12 people, including prominent businesswoman Robyn Bignell, found the experience overwhelmingly positive.

Ms Bignell said she would always remember sitting on the hillside above Nan Tien Temple, looking at the magnificent view and being asked to consider what was important in life.

"That was just perfect," she said. "I came back and my normal 30-minute walks in the morning started to become about not so much walking the dog or exercise, but about quiet time in my head. About walking meditation, about breathing exercises."

Mr Gould said those who participated in the Good Mood Safari could become role models and teach others how to live better lives.

"Within an organisational context there is research to say that people who have high levels of wellbeing and happiness have higher supervisory ratings within their appraisal systems and they have greater levels of organisational citizenship ... and they receive higher incomes," he said.

AusIndustry, which funded research for the concept, will formally launch the Good Mood Safari concept on September 19.

An Illawarra business and community leaders safari will be the first event, taking place next March.

Peoplecare chief executive Michael Bassingthwaighte was the first to book places.

Peoplecare's Anita Mulrooney will join a February trial before Mr Bassingthwaighte participates in the March safari, which will signal the official start of the venture.

Mr Gould said the Good Mood Safari was an opportunity for business leaders to support a start-up industry and encourage economic diversity in the Illawarra.

"First, we want to have the local community embrace it, then the national community and then the international community," he said.

"We think this can be a way of further defining the features of the Illawarra. Employment creation is important to us because we want to be part of a great and healthy community."

Safari bookings can be made from next month when the Good Mood Safari website is launched.
