 Stop-work order on Beechwood homes

Stop-work order on Beechwood homes

16/05/2008 9:52:00 AM
About 85 homes between Wollongong and Nowra will remain unfinished until issues surrounding failed builder Beechwood Homes are resolved.

A stop-work order was issued on all Beechwood Homes building sites yesterday after the company's collapse on Tuesday.

Almost $15 million is owed to creditors by Beechwood Homes, which incorporates three companies - LED (South Coast), LED (North Coast) and LED Builders - according to Sydney-based administrator Armstrong Wily.

The Bunnings Group in Wollongong, Nowra's J&J Kiteleys roofers and South Coast Timber Suppliers are among the list of creditors in the region.

South Coast Timber Suppliers owner Brian Aulsebrook said he was owed about $350,000 by Beechwood Homes and didn't expect to get it back.

He blamed BankWest-appointed receiver and manager Deloitte for "sinking the ship" because of their stop-work order.

"The contractors got absolute instructions from the receiver to stop work so now there will be vandalism and pilfering and I would say that if the work doesn't get back on the rails by Monday or Tuesday, it will absolutely be the end for Beechwood," Mr Aulsebrook said.

"Given the extent of the number of people involved - the carpenters, concreters, the businessmen - it would have been reasonable for (Deloitte) to give them a chance.

"But what they have done here is destroy any hope of that."

Deloitte did not return the Mercury's call yesterday.

Mr Aulsebrook estimated that at least 20 concreters, 40 carpenters and 30 tilers were owed money.

"A lot of people who have done business with them for years will be okay - it will just sting a lot," Mr Aulsebrook said.

Administrator David Hurst refused to provide the Mercury with a list of creditors because he said a complete tally was still being compiled.

He said the first creditors' meeting would be held in a week at the Masonic Centre in Sydney.

Beechwood Homes is owned by millionaire thoroughbred breeder Larry King.

Former Wollongong Hawks owner John Carson sold the business to Mr King 18 months ago.

I wonder if Mr King has had the time to move all his assets into areas where they can't be touched. Perhaps he could take the time to visit and apologise to my daughter and son-in-law for the likely loss of their $155,000 home, one week from being completed.

Oh I forgot, don't worry about it Mr King - they'll be out working hard to pay off the debt still owing to the bank for a home they'll likely never own, while you're out playing golf. Enjoy the weekend.

I agree with Waz. We were about three weeks out from getting the keys to our $300,000 home.

We own the land but all we can do is wait and see what happens.

Maybe Mr King would like to help us out by either paying our mortgage payments each month or pay our rent that we are paying while we wait!
