Worried MPs in talks on Shell Cove marina

12/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
State MPs Matt Brown and Lylea McMahon will meet Shellharbour City Council representatives to see if there is a way the NSW Government can help speed up construction of the Shell Cove marina.

Last week, Shellharbour council general manager Brian Weir announced developers Australand had indefinitely delayed construction of the $150 million marina due to the downturn in the residential market.

Mr Brown, whose Kiama electorate takes in the Shell Cove subdivision, said he was "really concerned" with the delay.

"Many families have bought property in the area believing a marina will be built," he said.

"Their expectations are legitimate.

"(Shell Cove) has been a vision since the '80s and Lylea and I want to see that vision realised."

Mr Brown defended Mr Weir's role in the development.

Mr Weir receives a separate salary of $30,000 for overseeing the Shell Cove project.

"From what I understand his relationship with Australand is not the reason for the delay," Mr Brown said.

Ms McMahon said she had concerns over what impact the delay would have on the financial viability of Shellharbour council.

She said Mr Weir's relationship with Australand was one of the issues raised in the public inquiry.

Shellharbour council's administrator David Jesson has recommended that Kleem Consulting be engaged to prepare a performance agreement between the council and Mr Weir.

Ms Mc Mahon is correct about the delay having an impact on the financial viability on council but why be concerned about saving the ratepayers over $100M?

Surely if the State Government has cash to throw around it would be better spent on the Maldon Dombarton rail link or some other realistic project rather than the "pie in the sky"(to quote the late Wal Murray) marina.

Our pollies would be wise to remember that there were many more ratepayers against this project in the first place as there are now living in Shell Cove. Hence all the secrecy. Might be a chance to go back to the people of Shellharbour and see if we really do want this construction to go ahead.

The Shell Cove marina project was never viable and in the end the NSW tax payer will be bailing out yet another Labor backed project failure.

So the much vaunted marina has come to a dead stop. Apparently the plan was to use the monies from residential sales to fund the marina.

Now the excuse is that sales have slowed. But for about fifteen years this Shell Cove project has been progressing quite nicely. So, where has all that money gone?

Fifteen years ago it was the opinion of many that the marina would never be built. It was just a ruse to boost sales. It now looks like this was the truth.

Also, the Shell Cove project was built on a contract between Walker Corporation and Shellharbour Council. Why was the marina not included as a contractual obligation when the contract was being drawn up?

Now we are told that B.Weir gets a separate salary to oversee this contract. So he must be in a position to answer the questions. Why was the marina never an obligation? Why has the marina not being built to date?

The residents of Shellharbour and Shell Cove deserve better than this.

The press releases from Shellharbour Council over the last couple of weeks imply that Australand are finding it difficult to raise funds because they can't mortgage our land. I don't think the state gov't is going to splash any money around here John; I think Matt & Lylea came to town to get Council to change the agreement, to enable Australand to mortgage our land. Time will tell, but I'd be willing to lay a bet on it.

The opposition to the Marina at Shell Cove goes back a long way. It was one of the issues which gave birth to an online community forum started c. 2006 I think. It is now in ts third ascention as www.illawarrarumournet.co.uk

Fergie, opposition to the marina was one of the issues that gave birth to local rag The Community Voice, the predecessor to the Lake Times. Illawarrarumournet.co.uk has been a wonderful alternative to the print media.
