They will be Wollongong team-mates next season, but Cam Tragardh and Dusty Rychart will go head to head this weekend.
Tragardh and Rychart played together with the Brisbane Bullets two years ago and have been reunited at the Hawks.
But now they are starring in the Queensland Australian Basketball League - Tragardh with the Northside Wizards and Rychart with the Brisbane Capitals.
Tomorrow their teams, which finished with identical 13-5 win-loss records, square off in a sudden death play-off.
Tragardh scored 67 points in a game last month, so Rychart knows he will have his hands full trying to subdue his future Hawks team-mate.
"We got them once by five points. But I'm sure they'll come out and give us a run for our money," he said.
"Trigger's a good player. He's going to get his 30 or 40 points, it's just a matter if he can get his team over the line. It's going to be hard to stop him," Rychart added.
"You can't really stop him, you hope he has a bad game and only scores 20."
Waiting in the wings is another Hawks newcomer.
Rhys Martin is the starting point guard for minor premiers Rockhampton (16-2) and his team is the clear title favourite.
"Whoever goes through, it's going to be hard to beat Rhys' team," Rychart said.
"They finished top and it's going to be on their home court if we get that far. They got us by 25 this year so they'll be tough to beat," he warned.
Rychart had his first training session with the Hawks on Tuesday and will fly back to Brisbane with Tragardh today.
"It's all good," the former University of Minnesota forward said.
"I'm liking the intensity at training. Coming in, usually people are out of shape and guys are struggling, but everyone's showing a lot of intensity, especially the young guys.
"I've found a place to live and everything's settled, except I have to get the internet and cable going.
"I'm excited with Kavossy (Franklin) and Sav (Glen Saville) coming back. I think we'll be all right."
Martin was a part-time player with the Bullets and is keen to make the most of his opportunities with the Wollongong team.
"I went to high school with Cam and I played with Dusty at the Bullets last year. I've never played with Kavossy or Sav, so it'll be good to work with experienced guys like them," Martin said of the new season.
"Everyone can play, and it's just great to be a part of it because you know you're going to learn and you're going to be pushed to get better," he added.
Also making his presence felt at training this week was off-season signing Anthony Petrie.
"It's been really good. There's awesome balance within the team," Petrie said.
"It was a bit tough when we only had four or five here last week, but with Dusty and Tragardh arriving, it's been good to be able to work on my game and learn a few offences."
Franklin arrives from the US on Monday and Saville will join the team after his Olympic commitments.
The Hawks start their season on September 18 against the Breakers in New Zealand.
