Wollongong Hawks facing injury hurdle

28/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
The Wollongong Hawks flew to Adelaide for trial games yesterday, minus ailing centre Larry Davidson.

Wollongong take on the 36ers in two matches - tonight at Gippsland and on Saturday night at the Distinctive Homes Dome.

Davidson has already missed two trials with a mysterious knee injury.

And with season's start only three weeks away, Wollongong coach Eric Cooks' anxiety is growing.

"He had an MRI a couple of weeks back and that showed nothing structurally wrong, so we'll try some new things and keep checking all the options and possibilities," Cooks said.

Davidson has a history of knee injuries, having undergone operations three times on his right leg and once on his left leg.

The 25-year-old got through 30 games for the Hawks last season and initially believed his latest injury would not interrupt his pre-season.

"I remember that it was sometimes the same with (former Hawks star) Mel (Thomas), and he'd get some stuff cleaned out at the back (of his knee)," Cooks said.

"Hopefully it's not that serious with Larry.

"He'll keep working with the physio, but the season's getting closer and we want to get him right and on the court," Cooks admitted.

The Hawks are 1-1 in the pre-season, losing to Sydney in Wollongong a fortnight ago but bouncing back with a win over a stronger Spirit side last Friday at Penrith.

Incumbent captain Mat Campbell believes the Hawks recruited well in the off-season.

"We've got Dusty (Rychart) in there and we know what we're going to get with our import now," Campbell said optimistically.

"He's just solid and works hard every day. He's just the way we want to play.

"(Anthony) Petrie's done the same thing. He's fitted in really well. I hadn't seen too much of him and I'm excited about what he brings.

"He's young and hungry and wants to play in the league for a number of years," Campbell added.

Dual-Olympian Glen Saville will miss tonight's game but will head to Adelaide tomorrow for Saturday's clash.

Also missing from the trials will be back-up guard Rhys Martin, who is playing with the Rockhampton Rockets in the ABA finals.

The Hawks return on Sunday before flying to Queensland next week for two trials against the Gold Coast Blaze.
