High-fives for hockey's top scoring pair

23/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
Five was a popular number with Illawarra hockey's top scorers Elliot Ashby and Tim Burnham on the weekend.

The pair each netted five times in victories for Wests and Albion Park to go clear at the top of the leading scorers table.

For Devils striker Ashby it was his second handful of goals for the season and helped Wests hammer Dapto 8-1 at Lindsay Maynes Oval.

"I've never scored five (goals in a game) before this year and now I have done it twice," Ashby said.

"I also did it against Robertson earlier in the year.

"It is just a case of taking the opportunities when they come and you don't really think about (how much) you're scoring until the game is over."

Ashby is on track to better his best season tally of 33 goals when he won the goal scoring title in 2006, but he still trails Burnham by one this year.

The Albion Park left winger was given too much space in the competition leaders' 8-3 home win against Robertson to take his total to 20 for 2008.

"I was just on the end of some good work from the midfield," Burnham said.

"I was more worried with winning the game than how many goals I was getting (on Sunday) because it was close for a long time."

With six rounds remaining Ashby and Burnham will both keep an eye on the goal scoring ladder with their respective clubs already assured of places in the finals.

"I won it two years ago and it was a great achievement, but I would prefer to win the premiership," Ashby said.

"When you score five (goals) you expect to go clear but Tim obviously had a good day as well."
