Malaysia beckons for young hockey hotshots

Illawarra hockey stars Kieran Govers and Tristan White have been selected in the Australian squad for next year's Junior World Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

Govers has long been a member of the national junior team but 18-year-old White forced his way into the 24-man squad with his performance at the Australian under 21 titles championship in Darwin last month, where he scored three goals.

"It's great to have Tristan in the squad with me," Govers said.

"He played really well in Darwin and it's great to have a couple of players from down here in the squad.

"Considering only four players made it from NSW it is a great achievement for hockey (in the Illawarra region)."

Govers made the squad after fighting back from a hip injury, which threatened his career and still limits him on occasion.

He scored seven goals in Darwin including one in the 4-3 loss to Queensland in the final.

"I'm just happy to be there myself because it has been a long way back," Govers said.

"I'm still not allowed to drag flick because of the hip but I'm hoping to get the all clear from the doctor soon.

"It has been my aim to go to the Junior World Cup for a long time and this means I'm another step closer."

Before heading into camp in Perth this October, the squad will be cut to 18 with the team to be finalised in the new year.
