Wollongong racer Jay Marmont wrapped up his first Australian Motocross Nationals title at Coolum on Sunday but only after some nervous moments.
Needing just a top-12 finish in the first of the round's two races to win the title, Marmont suffered a crash that had him thinking the worst.
"It was like the second or third turn, I could see it all coming apart - the whole championship, everything, I was like, 'man, I'm going to have to do this in the second moto now'," Marmont said.
"I didn't get the best start and I got brought down by a couple of guys in the field. I got stuck underneath their bikes and then one guy hit me and I was seeing bikes come over me everywhere and I came across the game dead-last on the first lap. My pipe and everything was smashed up, my bars were bent and my wheel was facing the other way."
Marmont remounted and rode a steady race to finish 12th and wrap up the championship.
"I just rode to the position where I had to come in ... once I got into that position I just stayed there and tried to get the bike across the line. The next race was just about going out and having fun."
With the title secured, he finished second in the final race to Yamaha team-mate Cheyne Boyd.
Marmont's attention now turns to the Super X series where he says the momentum gained from his series win will stand him in good stead.
A two-time Australian Supercross champion, Marmont says he is more suited to the shortened, stadium-based version of the sport.
"I've got really good momentum going into the Supercross," he said.
The seven-race Super X series begins in Perth on October 4, with round five at WIN Stadium on November 15.
