St George Illawarra may have no choice but to allow players like Wendell Sailor to play rugby union in France during the off-season.
Dragons chief executive Peter Doust believes NRL clubs can no longer compete with the big money available in the Northern Hemisphere and is ready to do deals to allow stars the chance to "improve their brand" overseas.
Only a day after captain Mark Gasnier walked out on the club to play rugby with Stade Francais, Doust said that a player like Sailor could end up playing a guest role in rugby union in France or Japan during the NRL off-season.
"Players like Wendell have a brand that is recognised worldwide and we would not stand in his way of maximising it," Doust said.
"If he could do a deal similar to the one 'Joey' Johns did with Warrington and play four to six games over there and, if it could be beneficial to everyone, we would look at it."
Doust stressed that despite rumours linking Sailor with French rugby, no deal had been discussed and the 32-year-old was "focused" on gaining a permanent Dragons spot on the wing.
The Dragons boss has floated the idea of players playing the northern and southern seasons in one year but admitted there would be difficulties.
"It's something that would have to be monitored closely, so the players get enough of a break," Doust said.
"The world is getting smaller and things are changing. Dan Carter is coming back to play for the All Blacks even though he is playing in France and players have come back to play for New Zealand in Tests for years from the Super League."
