On the verge of equalling a club record eight successive victories, St George Illawarra halfback Ben Hornby believes the team's tough mental attitude has it better placed than the ill-fated surge of 2005.
The Dragons will equal their biggest winning streak if they beat Canberra in Sunday's NRL clash at WIN Stadium.
With a cast of international representatives in 2005, including Trent Barrett, Jason Ryles, Mark Gasnier and Ben Creagh, the Dragons marched to the finals, winning eight straight games.
But the dream run ended in heartbreak when St George Illawarra were cut down by eventual premiers Wests Tigers in the preliminary final. "Obviously those sides had a lot of internationals in them and this side doesn't have the same internationals, but we are going okay," Hornby said.
"We've just got to go out there and focus on trying to get that effort each week.
"Everyone is contributing when they need to be contributing.
"When Gaz had been out in the past we've thought 'geez, Gaz is out', but this year we've got a new mental attitude where whoever comes in can do the job."
The Dragons' form has been criticised because of victories over teams not at full strength.
During the streak of seven wins they have beaten reigning premiers Melbourne and Brisbane without their Origin players.
They were the first team to win at Gold Coast's Skilled Park, but the Titans were missing halfback Scott Prince and Anthony Laffranchi.
The Dragons then overpowered the Knights, without captain Danny Buderus at EnergyAustralia on Saturday night.
But Hornby hit back at the criticism, pointing out the Dragons have had their own key players out this season, including NSW Origin representatives Matt Cooper and Gasnier.
Cooper (quad), Gasnier (back) and Creagh (knee) are likely to overcome injury to be named in the Dragons line-up today for Sunday's battle with the Raiders.
"Obviously we've met sides not at full strength, but we beat Manly when they were at full strength," Hornby said.
"It's not so much about who we're playing, but we're just putting in and each week is a new challenge. We've put ourselves in a good position and it's up to us to keep going forward and whether blokes are injured or not it shouldn't matter. To us, we've proven we can without blokes and with blokes (in the team)."
