Gasnier quits for union

15/07/2008 6:19:00 PM
Dragons skipper Mark Gasnier has confirmed he will quit the NRL club at the end of the season to take up a lucrative deal to play rugby union in France.

Gasnier held a media conference at the Dragons home base at St George Leagues Club to announce this would almost certainly be his last season in the NRL and he will take up a two year offer with Paris-based rugby side Stade Francais.

Gasnier blamed a shortfall in the third-party payments in his current contract for his decision to leave.

``I made the decision because it became very clear to me that the commitments that were made to me and that I agreed to in 2006 involving external parties was not going to eventuate,'' he said.

``Everyone knows that we have a relatively short time as athletes and therefore we need to ensure that we maximise our opportunities on and off the field.

``This definitely wasn't an easy decision to make,'' said Gasnier. ``I love the Dragons and the club has always been fantastic to me.''

The rugby deal means Gasnier will not play in the World Cup in Australia in October.

One of the biggest names in the NRL, Gasnier was named skipper of the Dragons earlier this year and becomes the second Dragons' captain in three years to leave the club to play in Europe.

Trent Barrett took up an offer to play for Wigan in the English Super League after the 2006 season, but in 2009 will return to the NRL to play with the Dragons' main rivals Cronulla.

How about expanding on what the actual third party deals were and who did not meet their end of the agreement.

C'mon, fair enough he is going, good luck to him, but loyal "paying" St George supporters (like me since 1969) deserve much more from Mark and St George Illawarra in the form of a thorough explanation of the facts rather than this weak effort.

Go Gaz! Earn the elite wage you so desire and good luck to you!

Guess what - the Dragons are bigger than one player. Last time I looked it was still a team sport and as shown on the weekend all the team needs to pull their weight because even star centres can't do everything well.

As a supporter I would ask that you do not come back when you are homesick or when you find out there is nowhere in the world like Australia.

Just one favour from this fan - please Gaz can you take Peter Doust with you?

Mark who?

Shame that in trying to hold on to Gasnier, the Dragons management sold off its real talent in Josh Morris, splitting in its nascent stages what was almost certain to become one of the most formidable backline pairings in the NRL.

Together with Brett, Josh would've developed into a palpable asset - and a damn sight cheaper one than France's latest wide-eyed, wide-jawed sojourner.

Gaz is gone, and who can blame him? There's only one other clause in the world that great, and he lives in the North Pole.

The man talked up as ''the world's best centre'' only lives up to this name whilst playing for NSW and Australia; at the Dragons he under-performs. Against Canberra on Sunday, he ''saved the day'' by setting up a last-minute consolation try. Before that, Colin Best steamrolled him. It was also evident in this game that his fellow players weren't taking his leadership seriously and weren't listening to their captain; and frankly, why would they? For the past few months all they have heard about is his whinging! Gasnier clearly has no loyalty to the club, and is leaving for $50,000. This is an excuse. He tries to leave every two years. I can't even understand why he is still captain; he isn't even committed to the club. Gasnier's situation also magnifies the poor management at the club. He's had them wrapped around his finger ever since 2006. I say good riddance and bon voyage.
