For departing Dragons captain Mark Gasnier, it's now or never in his quest to win a NRL premiership.
After 15 Tests for Australia and nine State of Origins matches for NSW, a glaring hole in Gasnier's resume is the absence of an NRL title.
"This season is very important to me. I would love nothing more than to go out and win the comp, because then all of the boxes are ticked," Gasnier said.
He said his lack of premiership silverware was never more evident than when in State of Origin camp with long-time centre partner Matt Cooper.
"I get really jealous every Origin camp because every player's got their premiership tattoos - not that I want a tattoo - but I want a premiership.
"You sit there, (look around) and he's won a comp and he's won a comp and he's won a comp - and I was sitting with Coops (Cooper) at Origin camp going 'do you feel left out or what?'
"We're the only blokes that haven't won a comp and they all talk about that feeling that can't be beaten."
When the 26-year-old announced he was leaving the NRL at the end of this year, and effectively ruled out a comeback, it meant that the chances of Gasnier winning a competition had rapidly diminished.
Playing in what was regarded as one of the most talented teams in the NRL, Gasnier has made it to the NRL's preliminary finals twice.
In 2005, St George Illawarra were red-hot favourites before they were defeated by eventual premiers Wests Tigers 20-12 in a preliminary final.
Again in 2006, the Dragons fell a game short of the NRL decider when they were defeated by Melbourne 24-10 at almost the last step.
Gasnier said the fact that Dragons stalwarts Jason Ryles, Josh Morris and coach Nathan Brown were leaving the club at the end of the year was added motivation to win this year.
"We're all of the same thinking ... we'd love nothing more than to tick that box - especially Jason and myself, because we're going overseas.
"Josh will obviously have a lot more opportunities to put that ring on his finger, but for Jason and I it's this year or none," Gasnier admitted.
