St George Illawarra fullback Brett Morris admits the prolonged Mark Gasnier contract saga had become a distraction and says that now the Dragons captain's future has been resolved the team can concentrate on their run to the semi-finals.
Morris says he could see the effect the speculation surrounding Gasnier's situation was having on some senior players.
"Yeah it was a little bit of a distraction ... with the impact it had on the team," Morris said.
"Personally it doesn't bother me too much but when there's a couple of blokes who are real good mates with Gaz and you see it getting to them, then I suppose it was a bit of a distraction."
The fifth-placed Dragons have already had to deal with the early season conjecture over the future of coach Nathan Brown.
Once it was announced that Brown would not be at the club beyond this season, the Dragons soon turned their poor form around to put together a seven game winning streak.
Morris said he hoped the resolution of Gasnier's future would provide the catalyst for a similar late-season charge.
"Now everyone knows what's going on and it's out in the open, I think we can just move on with it and get back to our season and not have to worry about all of this media circus," he said.
"I suppose now we realise that Gaz isn't going to be here next year and that there are a couple of other blokes who won't be here next year, we want to do our best for them and try and win this premiership that we haven't had for so long."
Brett's twin brother Josh agreed that the team were looking forward with a clearer perspective now that Gasnier had made his announcement.
"It's good to get it over and done with and just concentrate on playing footy and winning games, staying in the top eight and getting ready for finals time."
