 Nightingale wants an attacking role

Nightingale wants an attacking role

21/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
St George Illawarra star Jason Nightingale yesterday revealed his desire for a permanent switch to fullback in the future.

The Dragons leading try-scorer this season with 12, Nightingale has shifted to fullback for the past fortnight while Brett Morris is out with a shoulder injury.

And while the New Zealand international is content playing on the wing for the time being, he admitted wanting to make his name as a fullback.

"I've enjoyed it, it's a lot more running, but it's good for me to get my hands on the ball a bit more," he said.

"Later in my career I wouldn't mind a shift to fullback ... when I learn the wing game down pat and work on my support game around the ruck."

Nightingale's rise to prominence this year has been stunning. He led the NRL try-scorers list mid-season following his selection for the Kiwis in the Centenary Test.

Coach Nathan Brown has shifted captain Mark Gasnier back to a more traditional centre role in recent games after weeks with him playing fullback in attack.

And the move paid off, with Gasnier scoring a double in the 24-20 win over the Broncos on Friday night.

Nightingale said he had benefitted from playing the fullback role full-time, rather than switching to the wing when Gasnier was moved in attack.

Meantime, returning second-rower Ben Creagh yesterday declared himself 100 per cent for Sunday's battle with the Warriors at WIN Stadium.

"(I'm) a lot more confident than last time, my legs are a lot stronger," he said.

"But I'm a lot more confident than last time.

"I'm looking forward to getting back out there on the edge again and do my best and I think my fitness will be fine."

While Creagh is raring to play, Dragons five-eighth Jamie Soward is still in some doubt with a back injury, after not training yesterday.

Soward is still expected to be fit, but Ben Rogers, who this week signed with Newcastle for next season, is on stand-by to come into the team, while young second-rower Matt Prior is expected to hold his place on the bench.

Yes, the "Night Bird" is the man for the job. Might be a rep fullback in years to come.

If Gaz plays where he should be, centre; Coop is fed more ball; and Nightie is left at the back they have great attacking options.

Allow the forwards to play a simple game and get rid of this idiotic one-off play where the ball is continually run back into the opposition forwards, and our forwards will dominate. Use Dell as a sub-forward at times - but running off Gaz/Coop; and get Hornby running again, and we have a real backline to fear.

All Rogers has to do is play strong and concentrate on his kicking game.

The occasional "clever" kick might also work against a tiring Warriors pack (chip) and short kick off.

We can win, and win well. But the team must jell together and do their individual jobs. Don't let people run, especially sideways, don't accept dummies, and don't do charge downs.

Simple really. Pressure is the key (and Shayne, of course).
