Stay on the ball and top four spot possible: Brown

25/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown believes the door to the NRL top four is well and truly open after the crushing win over the Warriors yesterday.

With two rounds remaining, the Dragons remain in seventh on the ladder, but are now just two points behind the fourth-placed Roosters with two rounds remaining.

The Dragons ran away to a 34-6 win in the second half, as the Warriors became "bumbling fools", according to coach Ivan Cleary.

But while the Warriors top eight chances - largely thanks to their poor for-and-against record - took a major blow, Brown has his sights on an unlikely top four spot.

"Roosters are only two ahead of us and we play them and we've got a better for-and-against," he said.

"So we can definitely go past them, it just depends on us winning.

"You've got to beat Parramatta and then beat the Roosters and obviously you need a result to go your way.

"The good thing is we can definitely put ourselves in a (good) position if we keep winning, we don't have to rely on anybody to lose really."

The Dragons are suddenly looking like a premiership threat to Melbourne after Gasnier produced his best performance of the season in the commanding win.

Prop Jason Ryles was outstanding, so too Bulldogs-bound Josh Morris and crowd favourite Wendell Sailor.

Morris and centre Matt Cooper each scored a double, as the Dragons visibly grew in confidence and equally noticeably, the Warriors fell apart.

If there was a game-breaking moment, it came early in the second half when the Warriors were trailing 16-6.

Second-rower Simon Mannering took it upon himself to find the line with a three man overlap hungrily waiting for the ball on his outside.

It seemed certain Mannering would score, until young Dragons replacement Matt Prior came across with a brilliant covering tackle to defuse the situation.

The Warriors were stopped in their tracks and bumbled every other chance they had.

Dragons lock Dean Young scored in the 56th minute, before Gasnier matched an earlier effort from New Zealand's Sam Rapira with a superb pass to set up Morris' second try.

Gasnier then dazzled the WIN Stadium crowd of 11,583 with a superb flick pass to allow fullback Jason Nightingale to seal the win.

DRAGONS 34 (M Cooper 2, J Morris 2, D Young, J Nightingale tries; M Gasnier 5 goals) d WARRIORS 6 (W McKinnon try; M Witt goal) at WIN Stadium yesterday. Crowd: 11,583.

It makes you wonder where we might be had we not lost to the Sharks twice and the two teams battling it out for the wooden spoon. Oh well, at least they in there with a chance. Go Saints. Let's make the grand final and win.
