Will Pasfield keep faith in Wolves?

9/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
Justin Pasfield's tenure at Wollongong FC may be in jeopardy after the keeper chose not to play for the club's under 20 team last weekend.

The Mercury understands Pasfield was asked to play for the Wolves under 20s against Bankstown City at Jensen Park on Saturday night - a request the Olyroos trailist declined after having been overlooked for first grade.

"I had the weekend off," Pasfield said.

First grade coach John Turner selected new signing Michael Turnbull in first grade for the clash, which ended in a 2-1 win for the Wolves - the club's fourth in a row.

It is believed Pasfield will wait to see whether he is named in the first grade side for Sunday's home match against Blacktown City before making a decision on his immediate playing future.

Coach John Turner will finalise his team on Friday night.

Wollongong FC chief executive Jock Morlando expected Pasfield to train last night.

Turnbull was signed last month to cover what would have been an eight-week absence if Pasfield had been selected to go to Beijing with the Olyroos.

The 27-year-old ex-Roma and Standard Liege keeper has also made stops at defunct A-League club New Zealand Knights (2006-07) and English club Bristol City. He also played in the old national league.

Turnbull is an Olympian, having represented Australia in the 2000 Games in Sydney.

His resume and strong form would come as little comfort to Pasfield, who was omitted from Graham Arnold's 18-man Beijing squad on Friday, despite starting one of the Australian under 23s' recent friendlies against Chile in Darwin.

That disappointment followed frustrating stints with A-League clubs Queensland Roar and Sydney FC in recent years.

Visa problems scuttled a possible move to English Championship club Queens Park Rangers during the Australian summer.

In 2005, Pasfield started one game during the Young Socceroos Under 20 World Cup campaign in the Netherlands.

The Mercury attempted to contact Turner yesterday but he couldn't be reached for comment.
