Wolves a 'special team': coach

7/07/2008 5:00:00 AM
Wollongong FC coach John Turner believes the Wolves are a special team in the making after their 2-1 win over Bankstown City at Jensen Park on Saturday night.

The come-from-behind victory stretched Wollongong's winning streak to four games and eliminated seventh-placed Bankstown from finals contention.

That win gave the Wolves second place on the NSW Premier League table for one night before Manly reclaimed second place with a win on Sunday. Wollongong are in third, but have a game in hand.

Wollongong trailed 1-0 after 35 minutes through a goal to Bankstown's Tayfun Devrimol, but Matt Bailey equalised five minutes later when he headed home a cross from Chris Price.

Lachlan Cahill scored Wollongong's winner in the 84th minute after a clever knock-down from Ilija Prenzoski.

"I think we have built a very special side - we were under the pump for 20 minutes, but the boys battled through," Turner said.

"It wasn't pretty, but it was courageous.

"They are a special group of guys, they just don't give up."

The Wolves were missing striker Dezi Giraldi (quadriceps strain), defender Michael West (shin) and Osagie Ederaro (broken foot) for the match.

Michael Turnbull kept his spot in goals ahead of Olyroos triallist Justin Pasfield.

Playmaker Michael Hawrysiuk returned to the starting side after a lengthy absence through injury.

Hawrysiuk, Bella Conde and Bailey were replaced in one fell swoop on the hour with the Wolves tiring and scores locked at 1-1.

Cahill, Samet Kaynak and Alfredo Esteves came on - Turner's gamble paid off, as Cahill scored Wollongong's winning goal in the 84th minute.

Turner said the result was a good sign for the final four games of the league campaign and the finals, which start in August.

"Every time I make them step up, they do it. Every time we change our goals, they meet them," he said.

"We haven't scored our best result of the season - yet.

"We have had a wonderful season so far, but we haven't achieved anything.

"There's a lot of work to do - we have four games to go in the league season and where we finish at the end of that could make a hell of a difference in the finals.

"If we finish fourth we would be in a sudden-death play-off and could be finished after a week of the finals."
