Wollongong FC is closing in on the NSW Premier League championship after yesterday's 3-0 win over Blacktown City Demons at Crehan Park.
That win, and surprise losses by Manly United and competition leaders Sutherland Sharks, catapulted the Wolves into outright second spot.
The Wolves trail the Sharks by three points but have a game in hand, meaning the premiership could hinge on the round 22 Wollongong-Sutherland showdown at Seymour Shaw Park.
Wollongong FC coach John Turner said his side's championship destiny was in its own hands.
"We've just got to win every game from here on in and we'll win the league," Turner said.
"We've won five on the trot and that's fantastic.
"Now we've got to worry about what we still have to do. If we're good enough we'll do it.
"We're three weeks away from a great moment for Wollongong."
Wollongong opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Ilija Prenzoski squeezed a shot underneath oncoming Blacktown keeper Ivan Necevski.
Steve Hayes, Tynan Diaz, Prenzoski and Dezi Giraldi all created chances later in the first half, but the Wolves could only take a 1-0 advantage to the sheds.
Blacktown's best chance came in first-half injury time when a knock down by towering midfielder Jordan Simpson bounced back across the goal mouth - however, there were no Demons on hand to capitalise.
Wollongong always looked the better side and doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Chris Price made no mistake with a penalty kick.
Tynan Diaz earned the spot kick when he was brought down in the box by Blacktown's Daniel Wilkinson.
The Wolves' lead could have been extended three moments later, but Dezi Giraldi's goal-bound volley off a neat cross by Prenzoski was saved by Necevski.
Giraldi hit the post on the hour from a tight angle to complete an unlucky hat-trick of near misses.
Steve Hayes made it 3-0 in the 72nd minute when he blasted home from the edge of the box after a clever cutback from Prenzoski.
Turner was impressed with his side's effort against the lowly Demons.
"Our defence is outstanding - they're putting their bodies on the line and are out there for each other," he said.
