Swimmers brave winter chill

More than 200 hardy souls braved the chilly water to compete in the South Coast Winter Swimming Championships hosted by Corrimal Marlins at the Continental Pool last Sunday.

Wollongong Whales won the overall pointscore with 38 points.

Stanwell Park Sea Eels and Coledale Oysters were equal second on 13.

The handicap winning club was Corrimal with nine points, followed by Austinmer Otters on six and Coledale one.

John Stacpoole of the Sea Eels claimed a prestigious double, winning both the over 40 years and over 50s sprints.

His time in winning the over 40s was 28.75sec and in the over 50s he clocked 29.97.

Bulli Sea Lions' Peter Kellaway (28.80) and the Whales' Rob Barry (29.57) filled the minor placings in the over 40s, while the Whales' Bing Dorahy (31.43) and the Oysters' Ray McGorry (31.81) did likewise in the over 50s.

The Whales' Shane Barrie (26.56) won the open sprint, with Austinmer's Josh Minogue (26.94) second and Whales' Matt Hiesley (27.34) third.

The over 30s sprint went to the Whales' Michael Jennett (29.01), the over 60s was won by the Marlins' Jeff Banks (34.09), Wollongong's Terry Carney (36.79) won the over 65s, while the over 70s winner was Austinmer's Noel Cox (37.97).

The Whales claimed the trifecta in the over 75s with Bob Barry (40.38) followed by Bruce Dingwall (44.74) and John Eckdale (46.13), and the double in the over 80 sprint with Stan Crutchley (1:08.74) first and John McLachlan second.

The A grade relay (10 x 50m) went to Wollongong (5:00.50) ahead of Austinmer (5:13.69) and Corrimal (5:28.69).

Bellambi Blue Bottles (5:48.44) won the B grade relay, while the Sea Eels (6:40.27) took out the C grade relay.

The nominated time C grade relay (10 x 50m) was won by Coledale, while the president and captain relay (2 x 50m) went to the Whales.

Coledale took out the nominated time relay (4 x 50m) and the over 40s relay (6 x 50m) went to the Whales.
