No substance, but pollies' visits welcome

Whether it's a gaggle, a maul or a pride, the collection of state ministers who are visiting the Illawarra during the Olympics is welcome.

Although they don't exactly get a gold medal for their effort (one minister lobbed to drop off a $5000 cheque - hardly worth the carbon emissions driving down from Sydney), it is important we get up close and personal with the pollies. And they with us.

As we revealed two weeks ago, the spin doctors have been keen for ministers to drive home some positive messages in the Illawarra and on the Central Coast. What we are getting are the usual motherhood statements about what a great job the Iemma government is doing but no significant commitments. Unfortunately, Treasurer Michael Costa couldn't give us any positive update on a new western grandstand at WIN Stadium.

At least they know where we are and what we want.

And another thing ...

Works along Belmore Basin have been a disruption to those who would normally enjoy the harbour front. But the beautification works and construction of a promenade will greatly enhance this majestic little piece of coast.

The Blue Mile may take a while, but we expect it will be something we will greatly appreciate when done.

Meantime, we wonder what the Lands Department is up to as it considers six proposals for development on Wollongong Harbour.

Again, we ask minister Tony Kelly - why the secrecy?

Why undertake the Blue Mile project? To expect state government to pay for this is an example of pork barrel spending. Spending hundreds of millions of dollars in a city with crumbling roads, a mall which has had no significant upgrades for decades, terrible rail and bus systems, unattractive urban sprawl and decay, overstressed road links to Sydney and an economy largely propped up solely by one corporation, Bluescope Steel is totally irresponsible. Why not try to solve some of those problems I mentioned? The foolish public is more interested in a few cosmetic improvements to the area rather than spending money wisely to actually improve Wollongong. A new new foreshore and stadium to house a losing rugby league team is similarly comedic.
