Sophie McLeod, one of the state's most promising triathletes, spearheaded Illawarra Triathlon Club's display of talent across the age groups at Callala Bay last weekend.
McLeod, a NSW Institute of Sport competitor, led all the way in the junior female professional category to win in a time of 1hr38min over the 1km swim, 30km bike ride and 8km run course.
The depth of the Illawarra club was evidenced by the continued success of Carolyn Dews, who placed second in her age group, adding to her outstanding season to date.
Greg Fisher, Bob Scott and Des Comer also had success, placing second in their respective age categories. One of the highlights for the club was the performance of newcomer Dave Williamson in only his second competitive triathlon.
He finished an excellent third in the 25-29 age group.
Williamson is only going to improve as he develops the technicalities of the sport, as is Bulli ironman and Coolangatta Gold star Ben Allen, who finished sixth outright in the junior professional ranks in his first triathlon.
Allen is also a prospect to be followed.
He has aspirations to race over the triathlon ironman distance.
Dews, Williamson and Scott, along with the NSW development squad, had to do without the support of coach Mark Scott who was racing at the same time in Phuket.
Although his support party was showing more interest in the elephants on the course, Mark produced a creditable fourth place in a competitive category, finishing just outside the medals.
He said he was happy with his race considering the limited preparation due to work, university, coaching and commitments in his role as Triathlon NSW development officer.
Dews, Bob Scott and Fisher are preparing for the Canberra Half Ironman this weekend as a qualifier for the Australian Ironman in Port Macquarie next April.
