Sevens team calls for Portuguese support

Portugal will field a team in the Lakeline Butchery Rugby League Sevens Tournament at Kooloobong Oval, Keiraville, tomorrow.

Coach Mal Speers wants the Illawarra's Portuguese community to support the team, captained by Shellharbour's Matt Coelho and including his Sharks team-mate Tim Jones, young Dapto footballer Ben De Brito and Vikings rugby player Brenton Dean.

Speers said the team had Australian players with Portuguese ancestry.

The squad has been training at Helensburgh to accommodate Sydney and South Coast players.

Portugal played a 13-a-side game against Japan at Sefton in Sydney last week, winning 28-16.

"We are hoping the Portuguese community in Wollongong supports us," Speers said. After competing in the sevens, the Portugal team members will return to their clubs.

"Later this year we are hoping to organise the Portugal team to be part of a curtain-raiser to one of the World Cup games," he said.

Sevens teams are: Leichhardt Juniors, South West Metro Waratahs, Western Suburbs Devils, Wollongong (two teams), Aquinas Colts, Portugal, Cook Islands, Corrimal Cougars (two), Doonside Roos, Moss Vale Dragons, Valley United Junior RLFC, Waterloo Storm, Redfern and Group Seven premiers Albion Park Oak Flats.
